SES PLATGETES

Ses Platgetes is a complex of coves near the village of Es Caló.

Ses Platgetes is a small group of three coves located on the northern coast of Formentera, close to the small fishing village of Es Caló de Sant Agustí. This stretch of coastline, located within a large cove enclosed between Punta Prima and Punta de Sa Creu, was once the second natural port of Formentera.

It was from here that various goods were shipped and traded with the neighboring islands: as a testament to that era, you can still see (and photograph, because they are a must on the island) the small fishermen’s huts that served, and still serve, as a shelter for their boats.

In this area, the nature is decidedly varied: you will find an alternation of rocks, very fine white sand and a dune system rich in pines and shrubs. The vegetation grows wild and free in these parts, but we remind you that it is strictly forbidden to walk in the dunes between the road and the beach: this stretch of landscape is protected by strict laws.
In fact, you will notice the special signs and ropes that delimit the area where the dune regeneration process takes place, dotted with vegetation for fixation.

This environmental diversification gives the crystal clear waters of this place truly unique shades: it is also one of the many places where you can go snorkeling and observe the marine fauna.

The coves

The first of these coves is an uncontaminated white sand beach with a beautiful turquoise sea. It is the first access point coming from the main road that leads from Sant Ferran to the village of El Pilar De La Mola.
Once upon a time this beach was very popular thanks to the presence of a famous beach bar, Amore & Iodio. Closed in 2014 due to the strict laws that, for several years now, have imposed the closure of bars and clubs that promoted the famous “aperitifs with music”. If you choose to stop here you can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, far from the chaotic beaches of the island.

Walking towards Es Calò you will reach the second cove. It is a natural bay composed of rocks and white sand, here too the waters are clear and crystalline but with rocky bottoms. For this reason it is advisable to be careful when going for a swim. Once you have passed the small rocks it will be easy to spot even with the naked eye the numerous fish present in this area.

The third cove is characterized by a rocky outcrop that divides it into two natural pools, one of which is used by fishermen as a port for traditional boats.

It is probably one of the beaches least suitable for bathers due to the impervious and rocky coastline and the winds that blow from the north.
On the other hand, it is the best area for scuba diving given the large number of aquatic animals such as octopuses, jellyfish and fish of various sizes and colors. So remember your mask and snorkel when you decide to visit Ses Platgetes!

How to get to Ses Platgetes

Ses Platgetes can be easily reached by car coming from the nearby village of Es Calò, or if you rent a scooter you can simply park it on the edge of the main road that leads to La Mola and then, through a network of walkways well integrated into nature, you will arrive at the sea.
These beaches can also be reached by local public transport: we remember that especially during the summer period, bus lines L2 and L7 make stops nearby.

Being a cove open to the currents, there will be days when the Tramontane wind (coming from the north) will make the sea quite rough and, if you should go for a swim, we advise you not to go too far from the shore. In case the wind makes it impossible to spend your day here, you can head to the nearby Migjorn beach, located exactly on the opposite side.

We also remind you that there are no facilities for renting sunbeds and umbrellas, nor are there any beach bars where you can get a refreshing drink. As in many other parts of the island, we recommend that you bring everything you need for your day at the beach. Here too, locals and tourists freely practice naturism.

In conclusion, we can say that Ses Platgetes, which means “the little beaches” in Catalan, is a truly unique place on the small island of Formentera. Not very popular due to its varied nature (we will not find long stretches of sand sloping down to the sea) it offers a valid solution for anyone looking for relaxation and wanting to get in touch with the wildest spirit of the island.
