Formentera in September: the reasons to go there

Deciding to go on holiday in September is a choice that more and more people consider when thinking about their summer holidays. If you are not obliged to the classic weeks of business closure, which often cover the period of August, postponing your well-deserved relaxation can prove to be an advantageous choice in several respects. Formentera in September embodies all this: peace and rest at a time when most of our fellow countrymen have already been punching the clock for several days.

Let’s take a look at the reasons why visiting the island at this time of year can be a viable option for your next holiday.

Cost savings

Firstly, this is the most important advantage for those who decide to visit Formentera in September. Airfares and accommodation are cheaper than in the summer months. This is due to the old rule that an increase in demand for a product means a higher cost of sale, as the supply remains the same.

As the demand from tourists is lower, the prices of airlines flying to Ibiza drop considerably compared to the same flight, perhaps bought for July or August. The same principle also applies to accommodation. Choosing to rent a flat in Formentera, rather than going to a hotel, is, regardless of the period, the best idea to optimise costs.

Climate and weather: the warm September sunshine

Formentera’s climate is Mediterranean. Winters are never harsh, so the temperature rarely reaches zero, and the rest of the seasons have very pleasant days. The sun is a constant feature that has rightly given the island the name “island of the sun”. Rainfall is scarce and, except for the inconvenience of strong winds, the island can be visited from April to October.

The weather in September in Formentera is more than comfortable, the average temperature is 24° C and the maximum reaches 28° C in the hottest hours. At night, as the temperature drops slightly, it is necessary to wear a jacket or sweatshirt if you are travelling around the island on a motorbike.

The days are still long, so it is possible to enjoy the island for many hours. The aperitif on the island, one of the most awaited moments for every holidaymaker, can be enjoyed in peace and quiet, as the sun sets after 8 p.m. at this time of the year. Spending the last hours of the afternoon in a “chiringuito” will therefore not be a problem.

It goes without saying that people go to Formentera for the sea. No doubt one of the reasons why the island is often compared to the remote atolls of the Pacific Ocean. In this period it is very pleasant to bathe in its waters. In fact, having accumulated the powerful rays of the sun from the previous summer months, the sea maintains a temperature of about 25°C. This will allow you to take long, repeated swims, not forgetting that the reflection of the water will help you get a perfect tan without suffering the scorching heat of August.

Peace and relaxation

Another advantage to take into account is the possibility of enjoying the beaches. What do you mean by that? We mean the peace, the silence, the unique sounds of nature that will surround your quiet days at the beach. There is less tourism on the island. Light years away from the chaotic crowds of the summer months, Formentera reveals itself in all its ancient beauty.

We can say it without hesitation: those who visit Formentera in September are tourists who don’t like chaos, disorder, queues in restaurants and confusion in general. It is, therefore, the perfect time for those looking to relax, for those who, having endured perhaps the summer in the city, are taking a holiday decidedly against the tide.

To go to Ses Illetes you won’t have to worry about getting up early to avoid the tedious queues at the entrance, or else enjoying Caló des Mort won’t be a problem, as it is in high season. So forget about the sardine effect and enjoy the beaches of Formentera.

The green routes of Formentera

The island, rich in beauty and charm, is not only sea and drinks on the beach. Its true nature, the rural one made up of fields, fig trees, windmills and breathtaking views, can be observed and enjoyed along some specific trails. We are talking about the green routes of Formentera, paths specially designed by the Consell Insular, which allow you to get in touch with the island’s genius loci.

September is the best time to discover some of them. After all, spending time outdoors is known to be therapeutic, so forget idleness and get ready to discover a new side of the island. Through walks or with the help of a bicycle, you will come into direct contact with nature. There are 20 signposted routes covering about 45 km of land. There are all kinds of trails: from the simplest, suitable for beginners, to the most demanding for those who are already experts in outdoor walks.

The weather is perfect for these excursions. The sun is pleasant but not as hot as in the summer months. The light is also clear and you will return home with magazine-worthy photos.

cami de sa pujada formentera

Among the most beautiful trails, we suggest you try the Camino Romano, also known as the Camí de Sa Pujada. This suggestive route starts in the village of Es Caló and rus along the cliffs until you reach a very picturesque place called El Mirador. From there, the view is very impressive.
Another very interesting route is the Camí de Ses Vinyes, the old road that used to connect the village of Es Pujols with the village of Sant Ferran. This simple path allows you to discover a rural Formentera rich in vineyards.

Cycling around the island

As many of you will know, the island is quite small. It has a total surface area of 83 km² and walking from one end to the other takes about four hours. The most common means of transport used to move around Formentera is by motorbike, followed by car and bicycle.

The island’s climate in September allows to make the greenest choice of all: renting a bicycle. Thanks to the beautiful sunny days, which are never too hot, the option of touring the island on this zero-emission vehicle can be a very good choice. First of all, you’ll do constant physical activity, which is known to develop the production of serotonin, the hormone of good mood.

And what about the beauty of slowly savouring the aromas and sights of Formentera? Exploring it by bike means stopping to take a close look at a plant, observing the landscape and taking a deep breath of the pure air of the island. After all, you’re on holiday, so there’s no rush, right?

As far as distances are concerned, you don’t have to worry at all: everything Formentera has to offer is concentrated within a few kilometres. If you don’t feel like renting a traditional bicycle, many motorbike rentals offer the possibility of renting electric bikes. This way, even the laziest will have no excuse!

During your holidays in Formentera, we recommend that you plan your trips in advance so that you can decide when to rent a scooter, useful for getting to the towns of La Mola or Cala Saona, and when to choose a bicycle, ideal for the nearest beaches and for getting around towns such as Es Pujols, Sant Ferran and Sant Francesc. Finally, at this time of year, the price of renting a vehicle is very reasonable.

No waiting in the restaurant

It may seem trivial, but finding a place to eat in Formentera’s restaurants can be a difficult task during the summer months. Long queues or tables booked days in advance can put off even the hungriest tourist. Despite the wide range of restaurants, bars and beach clubs, in the months of June to August, finding a good place to eat on the island is not so easy.

But this problem does not exist in September. The clientele is more select for the reasons explained above. Not everyone can wait until the end of the summer to enjoy a holiday in Formentera. This means that you don’t have to choose in advance what food to eat (Formentera now has cuisines from almost everywhere) and you don’t have to worry about being turned away. On the contrary, the atmosphere will be more relaxed around your table. There will be no hurried waiters or inadequate service, but everything will be as calm and pleasant as possible.

What to do in September in Formentera

Those who visit Formentera, apart from the sea, know that there are activities and places not to be missed once you have set foot on the island. One of them, for example, are the famous craft markets. A tangible legacy of the hippie communities that populated the island in the distant 1960s, these small fairs are present in the area from May to October. So don’t panic: you can wander around the various stalls without worrying about the summer chaos. Shopping can be done without interruption and, because there are fewer people, artists can spend more time telling you their stories and works.

The other two emblematic places on the island are the lighthouses, the one in the southwest at Cap de Barbaria and the one in the east on the plateau of La Mola. At this time of year it is possible to reach them comfortably without running the risk of encountering many people. They are very introspective places and the hustle and bustle of people is not conducive to a visit. Another good reason to decide to visit Formentera in September and appreciate this little piece of land even more.

In addition, numerous concerts are organised in the squares of the different villages at night. Every Monday evening there is Musica en vivo on the marina promeande, every Thursday night in the main square of Es Pujols there is World music, every Friday evening in the square of Sant Ferran there is Jam session and finally there is the event Jazz en directo every Saturday night in the square of Sant Francesc.
When you are there, check the events calendar to keep up to date on the various activities.
