Nudist beaches in Formentera
Formentera is considered by many to be the homeland of freedom and is a popular destination for those who practice nudism on the beach.
But which are the nudist beaches of Formentera? Before describing the places where you can practise nudism without any problems and feel in harmony with nature, it is correct to specify, without going into detail, the difference between nudists and naturists.
I have many friends who like to be without clothes on the beach, but this gesture, especially on an island like Formentera, requires a little deepening.
The difference between nudism and naturism
Taking off clothes can be an ambivalent act. Nudists tend to be those people who love to go to the beach and enjoy the holiday moment without clothes. Perhaps in search of the perfect tan (with no swimsuit lines to be clear).
Naturists are people who, in their daily lives, that is, even at home, undress in order to feel at one with Mother Nature. On the other hand, we were born naked and it seems that Adam and Eve were naked too!
Their attitude goes far beyond their holidays in Formentera. The fact of living without clothes, without superstructures or prejudices, places them in a world defined as naturist, where being naked is a necessity.
The nudist takes off his clothes because it has a functionality. The naturist takes it off to get in touch with the genius loci of the place.
In that sense, Formentera is a place where the lack of urbanisation in some areas (e.g. Migjorn) still leaves space for wild Mediterranean scrub. Crystal clear sea, sand dunes and aromatic plants growing all over the island, make Formentera one of those places where you can perceive nature in all its grandiose beauty.
The nudist beaches of Formentera
Formentera has very nice and popular beaches and equally beautiful but more secluded beaches. There are no signs indicating nudist beaches in Formentera, but it is up to you to decide whether or not to go to places where some people prefer to be without swimsuit. Here are 5 beaches in Formentera frequented by nudists:
- Playa de Migjorn is, without a doubt, a stretch of coast where nudism can be practised. This coastline, interspersed with rocks, is full of coves where Formentera’s nudists feel at ease. It is also very rare that, in similar places, there is confusion. Everyone tends to speak quietly, as if to leave room for the sounds of nature.
- Platja de Llevant (the beach in front of the famous Ses Illetes) is a place that allows you to fully enjoy nature and, for this reason, is very popular with nudists. It is rarely crowded and, even in high season, if you are an early riser you can enjoy a private beach. A spectacle hard to describe in words.
- Playa de Sa Roqueta, not far from the village of Es Pujols, is another place where the nudist beach occupies a large part. There are no well-defined areas for those who wear swimming costumes and those who don’t, but it is normal to find areas where the nudists are a bit far away from those who wear a bathing suit and vice versa.
- Ses Platgetes is the name of the beaches that can be found moving towards the locality of Es Caló. Here too, there are no rules or zones that delimit an area dedicated to those who love to get an all-over tan. Simply, being an unfrequented area of the island, it will be possible to relax and undress away from the chaos of the summer.
- Espalmador, on the other hand, an islet not far from Formentera, is a true paradise for nudists. It can be reached by boat from the Bahia company, the only company that provides the transfer, in about 20 minutes of sailing.
This small island, totally uninhabited and with no tourist facilities, offers a large nudist beach. Unfrequented because it is less accessible than the other nudist beaches of Formentera, Espalmador is a place with ancestral charm. Moreover, the beach, thanks to the coral waste that runs aground on the shore, acquires marvellous shades of pink.
One of the beaches of Formentera that is probably the least suitable for nudism is Es Pujols. This is due to the fact that, being the only beach close to a village, it is very popular (even with families with children) and is therefore not appropriate.
In conclusion, it is good to note that there are no nudist beaches on Formentera dedicated exclusively to this way of experiencing the sea.
The island offers total freedom of habits and customs with regard to clothing… is this the magic of Formentera?
