Exploring the new beach bars in Formentera
Who hasn’t dreamed of quitting it all and opening a beach bar? A romantic idea, a utopia for many, that someone, years ago, had the courage to turn into reality. In Formentera, the island that embodies the bohemian spirit, this story has deep roots: from the iconic Piratabus, an old bus converted into a beach bar on Migjorn beach, to the quiet La Franja kiosk, loved for its intimate atmosphere. These places, symbols of an era, have profoundly marked the island’s identity. However, the evolution of tourism and social changes have drastically reshaped the character of beach bars in Formentera.
It all began in 2022, when the municipality of Formentera, in compliance with Spanish national regulations, launched a public tender for the assignment of beach concessions and chiringuitos (beach bars in Spanish). This decision, aimed at modernizing the sector and expanding opportunities, opened the door to a new entrepreneurial landscape. The possibility of obtaining a license with a validity of eight years attracted the interest of large companies, with significant capital to invest. As a result, small family businesses, which for years had characterized the island’s coastal landscape, found themselves facing fierce competition.
Since the summer of 2024, Formentera’s beaches have ushered in a new chapter of their history. While a piece of the past seems to have drifted away, a future full of novelties and unique experiences has opened up for visitors. If you’re planning a stay on the island, don’t hesitate to book a vacation home in Formentera and imagine yourself already relaxing in one of the new beach bars. Even though the landscape has changed, the island retains its charm and awaits you to offer unforgettable summer adventures.
KM11 (formerly Piratabus)
Until the summer of 2023, the Formentera sunset was set to the rhythm of the famous notes of “Con te partirò”, enveloping the Piratabus in a magical and unforgettable atmosphere. But things change, and with them, legends too. In place of the old chiringuito, a symbol of an era, since August 2024, the KM11 has risen, a new landmark for those who want to enjoy the unspoiled beauty of the island.
The name, simple and direct, hides a double meaning. On the one hand, it indicates the precise location of the beach bar with respect to the port of La Savina, which is 11 kilometers away; on the other hand, it refers to the initials of Kiosko Manolito, the historic bar on Llevant beach, whose owners have been awarded the management of KM11.
And it is precisely the desire to maintain the unaltered spirit of the past that represents the strength of KM11. The atmosphere is the same as always, informal and welcoming, thanks also to the presence of the historic staff. The music, an alternative rock with generous decibels, continues to provide the soundtrack to the days, satisfying even the most demanding palates.
From an architectural standpoint, the chiringuito maintains its characteristic rustic style, with large wooden planks composing the main structure. A central body houses the bar, while a wide outdoor area covered by umbrellas offers shelter from the sun and a breathtaking view of the Migjorn coast.
The drink menu features timeless classics, such as the famous mojito, as well as a wide selection of beers and non-alcoholic beverages. For those who desire something more substantial, the menu offers a variety of dishes, from classic nachos and homemade tortillas to more sophisticated fried octopus, not to mention the fresh salads.
KM11 is more than just a place; it’s an experience, an authentic slice of paradise where time stands still. A legacy continues, a new chapter is written on the beaches of Formentera.

Gitana (formerly Kiosko La Franja)
Among the most interesting new additions to Formentera’s beach bar scene, Gitana undoubtedly stands out. Built on the site of the small Kiosko La Franja, on the beautiful beach of Migjorn and a short distance from the renowned Km11, Gitana distinguishes itself not only for its renovated aesthetics but also for management that involves well-known faces from the island and television. Behind this new project, we find the company that manages the famous Malaguena restaurant in Sant Francesc, along with the presence on the team of the talented journalist, Nina Palmieri, who has always been linked to the island.
Attended to in every detail, the beach bar boasts a thatched roof that evokes exotic atmospheres and furnishings that recall Mediterranean tradition. Even the staff wear eclectic and colorful clothing, with shirts and bandanas that reveal the gypsy soul of this new beachside venue.
Gitana in Formentera is the ideal destination for a relaxing lunch with your feet in the sand, but also for a romantic aperitif while admiring the sea. A haven of style and conviviality that captures the essence of the island, perfect for those who want to experience a genuine and unforgettable experience.

Karai (formerly Kiosko 62)
If Kiosko 62 was an icon, a true symbol of authenticity for those who frequented Formentera, there’s no reason why the new Karai chiringuito can’t, in turn, win the hearts of its patrons, both old and new. At first glance, little has changed: the essential and typically island style remains intact, giving this place, run by a young and dynamic team, a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
A wholly Italian company, led by Nico Antico and Enrico Gagliardo, well-known figures in the island’s gastronomic scene for Cafè Miranda and Al Dente restaurant respectively, has won the new concession. The cheerfulness and lightheartedness that you can feel at Karai make it the ideal place for a lunch with a sea view or a drink with friends.
The menu offers a wide selection of burgers and delicious tapas, while the drinks menu ranges from classic cocktails to various data-cfasync="false" data-cfasync="false" types of beer, including non-alcoholic options.
Officially opened on July 29, 2024, Karai is located at kilometer 6.2 of Migjorn beach. Why choose this beach bar? Simple: because its motto, “Karai qué guay!”, perfectly sums up the experience it offers: a dive into fun and relaxation, in a corner of paradise like Formentera.

[A] Mar (formerly Lucky)
After the legendary Lucky beach bar, a beloved spot for Italians in Formentera and run by a group of people from Bologna, closed its doors, a new gem has opened: [A] Mar. Located at kilometer 7.8 on Migjorn beach, in a still wild and unspoiled stretch of coast, [A] Mar joins the island’s landscape with a strong and authentic identity.
Built with simple rough wooden planks, the beach bar blends harmoniously with its surroundings, reflecting the most intimate and wild soul of Formentera. The atmosphere is that of a free and welcoming place, where you can relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.
What makes this new venue even more special is the collaboration with the artist Sol Courreges Bone, whose works, present inside the chiringuito, enrich its aesthetics and underline its deep connection with the island’s culture and traditions.
[A] Mar represents a new chapter in the history of beach bars in Formentera, a place where you can live a unique experience, just a few steps from the sea and with your feet in the sand. Here, the hippy spirit of the island finds a new expression, inviting visitors to connect with nature and themselves.

Chiringuito Bartolo
A timeless icon, Chiringuito Bartolo is the only beach bar in Formentera to boast such a deep-rooted history in the area, an unbreakable bond with a local family who have managed to pass down, from generation to generation, their love for this magical place.
About half a century ago, a young man named Bartolo Escandell, with the enthusiasm and passion that distinguished him, obtained a license from the Consell de Formentera to open a small business on Migjorn beach, more precisely in Es Copinyar. From that moment on, a tiny blue kiosk, perhaps imprinted in the memory of many, became a reference point, an institution for those who frequented Formentera. The breathtaking location, combined with Bartolo’s enterprising spirit, helped make it an iconic place.
Today, Chiringuito Bartolo continues to bear its name and lives on with a family atmosphere, thanks to the dedication of the children and other family members who manage it. The menu, simple and genuine, offers a wide selection of hamburgers, sandwiches, and salads, prepared with fresh, quality ingredients.
Unfortunately, recent regulations on beach concessions have forced some changes to the structure, causing it to lose a bit of its original charm. However, the spectacular view of Es Copinyar beach and the warm welcome of the owners make every visit an unforgettable experience.
Bartolo’s beach bar remains, in all respects, one of the most authentic and characteristic places in Formentera, a refuge where you can rediscover the flavor of traditions and the beauty of one of the island’s most evocative coastlines.

Briss (formerly S’Abeuradeta)
The lively beach of Es Pujols has been enriched by a new and charming spot: the Briss beach bar. Born from the ashes of the small and characteristic S’Abeuradeta kiosk, better known as Bartolino, Briss promises to become the new reference point for those who love aperitifs with a sea view in Formentera.
You’ll surely remember old Bartolino: a secluded corner, far from the hustle and bustle of the larger beach bars, where a wild and authentic atmosphere reigned. A place that, despite its simplicity, left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who frequented it. Briss, while completely innovating the offer, pays homage to this past, integrating perfectly into the surrounding natural context. Natural materials such as wood and rattan have been skilfully used to create a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere, an oasis of peace where you can take a break in the shade of the terrace.
To reach Briss, simply follow the wooden walkway that starts from Fandango restaurant towards the well-known Chezz Gerdi. It’s a short path that will lead you to a little slice of paradise, where you can enjoy breathtaking views and sip on a carefully crafted cocktail.

Bocaboca (formerly Chiringuito Saona)
On the splendid backdrop of Cala Saona beach, stands the Bocaboca kiosk, heir to the famous Chiringuito Saona. An oasis of design and charm that overlooks the sea, offering breathtaking views, ideal for admiring the unforgettable sunsets that characterize Formentera.
During the warmest months, starting at 5 PM, a relaxed and engaging atmosphere envelops Bocaboca, thanks to a music selection that accompanies customers until sunset. But the beach bar is not just a place to relax and enjoy the view: its gastronomic offer is designed to satisfy even the most demanding palates. In addition to classic sandwiches and hamburgers, the menu offers fresh salads and local specialties, such as delicious fried chipirones.
The elevated position of Bocaboca makes it a privileged observation point over the sea and the surrounding coast. A unique experience that will make you feel an integral part of Formentera’s magic. Nuu (formerly People)
On the westernmost shore of Es Pujols beach, nestled between the golden sand and the crystal-clear sea, lies Nuu, a small kiosk that stands out distinctly from the other beach bars of Formentera. Replacing the former People kiosk, Nuu boasts an essential and linear architecture, an oasis of tranquility for those who wish to savor the authentic atmosphere of the island, far from the hustle and bustle.
The structure of this beach bar is divided into a central body, used as a bar, and a series of comfortable outdoor seating areas, consisting of tables and umbrellas arranged on the beach, creating an ideal environment to sip a drink and sunbathe. The young and attentive staff is always ready to pamper customers with a smile and impeccable service.
To reach Nuu, simply follow the wooden walkway that leads towards the renowned Bocasalina restaurant and go past it. A short and pleasant walk that leads directly to this little corner of paradise.
