SES ILLETES

Ses Illetes is the most famous beach in Formentera. Clear water and coral sand will charm your eyes.

Ses Illetes beach (or Playa de Ses Illetes) is located in the peninsula of Es Trucadors, in the northern part of Formentera island. It is on the west side of this trip of sand that we find the wonderful pink beach; this particular color is given by the union between the fine white grains of sand and the residues of coral dust that emerge from the sea.

The name Playa de Ses Illetes means “beach of the small islands”: nearby we find Illa des Ponent, Illa de Tramuntana, Escull des Pou, Illa Rodona, Escull d ‘en Paia, Racò des Palo and the most famous Espalmador.

Not far from Ses Illetes, precisely on the opposite side of the strip of sand, we find the beach Platja de Llevant; these two beaches are so close that they are often called “the twins” and have the great merit that, when the wind blows from the west and the sea will be rippled at Ses Illetes you will not have to do anything but go to Platja de Llevant; vice versa when the wind blows from the east and Platja de Llevant will be very windy you will go to relax in the quiet of Ses Illetes. Both beaches belong to an area called the Natural Park of Ses Salines.

The secret…

In this authentic paradise, the sea looks like a natural pool: you will find very low sandy bottoms where you can walk for meters. The almost total absence of facilities for renting umbrellas and sunbeds means that this long stretch of beach (almost 500 meters) preserves a wild and spartan aspect.

The secret of these crystalline waters lies in the Posidonia Oceanica: this aquatic plant, very widespread throughout the Mediterranean Sea, is of great ecological importance and is considered an ecosystem protected by the European Union. This organism has a dual function: it produces a large quantity of oxygen and increases the transparency of marine waters. So Posidonia is not a seaweed! Its presence is an indicator of the excellent state of the waters.

How to get to Ses Illetes

The magnificent beach of Ses Illetes

Instagrammed at a rate of 1000 photos per minute with the hashtag #sesilletes, it is possible that during the high season you may find a bit of crowding. But don’t panic, we will reveal a simple trick to you! Wake up early in the morning, yes even on vacation, and you will avoid tedious queues at the entrance to the beach. As a nature reserve, the Island Council of Formentera charges a small fee to access these enchanted places.

There are different ways to get to Ses Illetes beach: by car paying 6 euros, by scooter paying 4 euros, while accesses by bicycle rather than on foot are totally free.
Ses Illetes can also be reached by a public bus (line L3) which stops about half a kilometer from the beach or with a comfortable taxi.

Preserving the area and encouraging a more conscious use of polluting vehicles are the two objectives set by the organisations protecting this nature reserve. For the past couple of years, a strict regulation has imposed a ban on quads. The prices quoted are for the high season, while in the low season the rates are lower.

From the port of Formentera to Ses Illetes

How to get from the port of Formentera to Ses Illetes? This is a question that many people on holiday in Ibiza ask themselves when they decide to spend a day on this beautiful beach. First of all, we recommend that you buy discounted Ibiza – Formentera ferry tickets online.
When you arrive at the port of Formentera, you can either rent a scooter and follow the signs to Ses Illetes (you will arrive in just 5 minutes) or take the L3 bus. The bus stop is right in front of the ferry ticket office, so very convenient!

Another important news is that the entrances to the beach are limited. Entrances and exits are constantly monitored by staff at the entrance. Going early to Playa de Ses Illetes allows, first of all, to avoid having to queue in the scorching sun and, in the early hours of the morning, you will feel like you are on an almost private beach.
Well, now that you are happily lying in the sun, undress yourself! Naturism, here as in many other beaches in Formentera, is practiced without any kind of exhibitionism.

For those who do not like to bask in the sun, there is the possibility of practicing different sports. You can choose between: windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, stand up paddling or snorkeling. You have no excuse now! Practicing these sports will allow you to experience the sea from a more intimate point of view and enjoy scenarios not visible from the warm beach. Alternatively there is also the possibility to rent a canoe or catamaran to reach the nearby Espalmador.

Where to eat in Ses Illetes? In the beach of Ses Illetes there aren’t many restaurants apart from the very famous as well as quite expensive Juan y Andrea and Es Molí de Sal. The latter is also a super-chic place to have an aperitif while waiting for the sun to go down, but also one of the most popular wedding venues on the island.

If you want to spend the day in Playa de Ses Illetes, we recommend that you bring everything you need if you don’t want to spend a lot of money!

In conclusion, we strongly suggest you visit Ses Illetes beach, as it has been decreed by Trip Advisor users as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

when you live it

and when you remember it. “
