The best pizzerias in Formentera
Traveling and tasting the culinary specialties of the places you visit is a well-established trend. When you go to Venice, do you rush to find the most renowned spritz in the city? Have you gone up and down the streets of San Francisco in search of the most famous clam chowder?
Nothing strange, since the gastronomic adventure is an integral part of any self-respecting vacation.
But what happens if after satisfying your curiosity you fancy a good Italian pizza and find yourself in Formentera? It is already a dish that has entered our hearts and of which we feel an almost physiological need!
Acclaimed in every corner of the world, this lady with humble origins enjoys a cultural and gastronomic redemption that few other dishes in the world can claim.
Formentera, the small pearl of the Balearic Islands, boasts a wide choice of pizzerias. Thanks to the presence of many Italian entrepreneurs, the pizza margherita, with all its variations, has found a home not far from its motherland.
Quartieri Spagnoli
If you love authentic Neapolitan pizza, that is, the kind that is easily folded over on itself and has a golden brown crust puffed up, a stop in the Quartieri Spagnoli is a must. This pizzeria, located not far from the square of Sant Ferran, is a piece of Naples in the Balearic Islands.
The pizza chef is clearly from Naples, and the oven where the pizzas are masterfully cooked is wood-fired. The goodness of his majesty, the pizza, lies in the raw materials used: all fresh and of the highest quality ingredients.
It is difficult to recommend one above all others, but among our favorites are the “Margheritona”, a soft pizza with the edge filled with ricotta cheese, and the “surprise” pizza: trust the pizza chef and you will not be disappointed! An absolute must in a true Neapolitan pizzeria is the fried pizza: delicious and cooked to perfection.
The pizzeria, which also functions as a restaurant, is frequented by families and groups of friends. If you are a couple looking for some privacy, we suggest you book (well in advance in high season) a table on the exclusive terrace: you will have the whole view of Sant Ferran and you will be enveloped by the magic of Formentera. Finally, the warm welcome of the owners Eugenio and Susy will make you feel at home.
Macondo
If you want to immerse yourself in a typically Spanish atmosphere, the Macondo pizzeria, located in the pedestrian street of Sant Ferran, is the right place to stop. Unlike the “Quartieri Spagnoli” (from which it is about 100 meters away) Macondo, offers Roman pizza, characterized by being thin and crispy, a well-known variant of the classic Neapolitan pizza. On the menu you will find a wide selection, from traditional pizzas to super stuffed and varied ones.
The restaurant is very popular with both tourists and locals, but thanks to the high number of outdoor seats, it will be very easy to get a table quickly.
After satisfying your pizza craving, you can take a walk through the stalls of the lively artisan market that is located a stone’s throw from the pizzeria, or head for a hierbas (typical liqueur of Formentera) to the nearby and famous Fonda Pepe.
Thanks to its success, the Macondo pizzeria has also opened a second pizzeria, El Cruce, which is located at the beginning of the paved road that leads to the Punta Prima tower.
Panperfocaccia
This restaurant, established in 2011, is located in the port of La Savina, right in front of the docking pier for large yachts. Their strength is definitely the wood-fired oven custom-made by skilled Neapolitan artisans! The pizza offered is, of course, Neapolitan, faithful to all the dictates of the traditional recipe from the dough onwards.
At Panperfocaccia, you can breathe a cheerful atmosphere, where you can spend a pleasant evening in company on the large terrace of about 450 square meters. We recommend trying the pizza with Pata Negra ham.
Sa Panxa
This restaurant is located in Sant Ferran, along the road leading to La Mola, specifically opposite the Verdera bar. Identifying it isn’t very easy because, from the outside, you can’t see practically anything except for a small sign. Upon entering, however, you’ll discover a delightful garden and a kitchen of excellent quality.
The atmosphere is informal, relaxed, and the entirely Italian management has managed to capture a large slice of the Formentera population. Sa Panxa, in fact, is a non-touristy place where you can breathe in the authentic island life.
All pizzas can also be made with whole wheat flour, with a small surcharge of €2. If you love trying particular combinations, we suggest you try the “Otto” pizza with spicy sobrasada (a typical Mallorcan sausage), goat cheese, red onion, and honey.
The secret of this restaurant-pizzeria, which also prepares excellent hamburgers, is certainly the frequent evenings enlivened by live music. Moreover, if you happen to visit Formentera out of season, it will be one of your favorite places: Sa Panxa is, in fact, open all year round. There is also a home delivery service, in case you fancy a pizza at home one evening!
Café del Lago
This Italian restaurant boasts an exceptional location. Situated in La Savina, it overlooks the small salt lake S’Estany des Peix, and the colors you can admire at sunset, comfortably seated on their terrace, are absolutely worth a visit. Let the skilled bartenders pamper you and have an aperitif while waiting for dinner. You won’t regret it!
The pizzas offered by Café del Lago boast the freshest ingredients, and the original “Payesa” pizza, filled with the ingredients of the famous payesa salad (dried fish, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, onions, bread sails), a typical dish of Formentera, is definitely worth mentioning.
Since the restaurant is also an excellent restaurant, you can opt for an appetizer to choose from those on the menu. The staff is very attentive to the service and will not leave anything to chance. Ideal for a romantic candlelit dinner.
Chezz Gerdi
Their slogan is “más que un restaurante” (more than a restaurant) and indeed the experience of taste (and not only) in this place is more than satisfied. Chezz Gerdi is a landmark for lovers of the island and in addition to being an excellent restaurant, it churns out amazing pizzas.
Margarita
If you want to eat a pizza with a light dough and a slightly crunchy outside, Margarita will not disappoint you! You can choose the dough of each pizza from xeixa, wholemeal and gluten-free flour. It is located in Sant Francesc and precisely near the ice cream shop La Mukkeria, ideal for ending a meal on a sweet note.
However, Margarita not only offers excellent pizzas, but also specializes in sushi and ceviche: their motto is in fact Tokyo to Lima. Eclectic venue, it is in fact also open for breakfast.
S’Olivera
This pizzeria is located in Es Pujols, along the main street leading to the sea. The pizzas are huge, very thin and easy to digest as they are prepared without yeast. The staff is very keen to make customers feel at ease, so the service is always warm and attentive.
The atmosphere is suitable for both families and groups of friends. Thanks to the TVs in the outdoor area, you won’t miss any sporting events.
Pizza Pazza
Pizza Pazza is a historic pizzeria in Formentera, and it has been around since 1982. It was the first Italian restaurant to open on the island. It is located in the center of Es Pujols and has a beautiful terrace where you can dine.
It offers a wide selection of pizzas with the possibility of having them with different doughs: you can choose between whole wheat flour, kamut flour or gluten-free flour with a slight surcharge of €2-3. The atmosphere is family-friendly.
Aigua i Farina
This restaurant, with its well-kept environment, is located next to the Alma Gemela swimwear shop, right in the heart of Sant Francesc. The pizza selection is wide and, in addition to the classic evergreens, you can try some that boast unusual combinations.
The prices are in line with other restaurants in Formentera and the staff is very friendly. Ideal for a romantic dinner thanks to the intimate atmosphere you can breathe.
Ugly Pizza
This very informal place is located in the center of Es Pujols nightlife and is managed by Alex, a friendly guy from Brescia. In a young and dynamic environment you will taste a light pizza topped with always fresh ingredients.
There are two screens showing the most important matches of the Italian football league: pizza and your favorite team’s match will be the winning combination even during your holiday in Formentera!
