The history of the Blue Bar: from its origins to today

The history of the Blue Bar in Formentera has deep roots. The structure appears to have been built in 1960 and, as we can still see today, is located in one of the most beautiful spots on the entire island: the Migjorn coast, rich in wild nature and bathed in a crystal-clear sea. The Blue Bar stands on a sand dune and, thanks to its slightly elevated position, offers a breathtaking panorama of one of the most beautiful beaches in Formentera.

During those years Formentera was a favorite destination for hippy communities. There were many young people who frequented it and who often decided to stay there to live. The Blue Bar was one of the main meeting places, along with the historic Fonda Pepe. Young dreamers gathered there, in search of a simple yet exciting life. The atmosphere that could be breathed in the Blue Bar was that linked to the ideals of a return to nature, to a way of life far from the growing European globalization.

Stories, shrouded in legend, tell that even characters of the caliber of Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix passed by here. There are no accredited sources that give certainty to these voices but, surely, many young hippies loved to spend their days here. A continuous stream of people passed by the Blue Bar every day but no one stopped there for long. Its management itself seems to have had an unclear history.

The Blue Bar in the 90s

Everything changed, however, in 1989 when a German family decided to take care of this magical place. Kaia and Guenther, along with their little son Rico, chose Formentera not for a fleeting vacation, but to spend their lives there.

It was from that moment on that the structure radically changed its appearance and was painted blue for the first time. Kaia, who loved to paint, worked to cover every inch of the structure in blue: with drawings of flowers and stars, what was once a simple beach bar became the Blue Bar. Her husband Gunther took care of the more technical aspects and so the electrical system was set up. The Blue Bar in Formentera was thus being reborn!

The change, however, was not immediately successful: there were few customers and it took a long time for people to start to love this place. Once the difficult moments, one could say of “running-in”, were over, people began to frequent the Blue Bar more and more often. This created, thanks to the energy of the people together with that of the owners, a positive atmosphere that is still tangible today. The Blue Bar transmitted joy and lightheartedness and Kaia and Gunther’s dream was coming true.

Their days were very busy at the same time: the Blue Bar was looked after like a child! Between daily cleaning and restocking drinks, there was always something to do. At one point, however, the couple encountered several obstacles and were forced to close.

But as always happens to strong and tenacious people, the break was temporary and, when they reopened, they decided to transform the Blue Bar into a restaurant. This idea allowed them to receive more and more customers and it was natural to hire staff as well. So cooks and waiters arrived to help with Kaia and Gunther’s frenetic work. The Blue Bar was now open, both day and night.

But the news didn’t end there: Kaia had another great idea. At sunset, a natural spectacle already full of pathos, she decided to play some relaxing music. She understood that creating an enveloping and emotional atmosphere would attract even more customers to her bar. People immediately welcomed this novelty and every evening the Blue Bar was packed with people. Years passed and the bar became one of the most popular places in Formentera.

Its fame grew little by little and, even today, we island lovers cannot give up the sunsets of this place suspended between dream and reality. Because let’s face it, the Blue Bar has managed to create a truly special identity for itself. Few places in the world like this can make you feel “light”. Kaia, Gunther and the no longer little Rico still take care of the Blue Bar. The business turned 30 in 2020!

What to do at Blue Bar

Getting to Blue Bar is simple. At km 8 of the road that leads to the village of La Mola, turn right and take a long dirt road that will end at a large car park near the sea. On your left you will find the Blue Bar, while taking the wooden walkway on your right you will reach the Kiosco Lucky.

The current Blue Bar, thanks to its positive energy and the wonderful location that sees it rise on the beautiful beach of Migjorn, is not far removed from what it represented for hippies many years ago. Even today it is possible to spend a fantastic day there: you can choose it thanks to its nearby beach and also for lunch with a wonderful sea view.

In the afternoon, instead, you can relax under its parasols and wait for the sunset. The aperitif takes place every evening accompanied by background music, except for Tuesdays and Sundays, when the dancing alien show takes center stage. In the next paragraph we will focus on the unmissable “Alien Show”.

But it is in the evening that you can let loose at Blue Bar without any rules! The venue, in the internal part, is transformed into a dance floor. Between reggaeton music and 90s revival, fun is guaranteed. The atmosphere is that of the typical Spanish movida: a little alcohol that disinhibits even the shyest and a great desire to escape from conventional schemes! If you want to spend an alternative evening this is the place for you!

The Blue Bar is also open for dinner. If you want to eat in Formentera in a cheerful atmosphere while waiting for the nightlife, here everything is possible! Depending on the evenings, you can also find live musicians playing. The cuisine is typical Mediterranean cuisine where fresh fish is ubiquitous. Try their sangria and you won’t regret it.

Alien Show

Blue Bar has the distinction of offering a unique show, the Alien Show, a must among the aperitifs of Formentera. Decidedly out of the ordinary and highly scenographic, it takes place every Tuesday and Sunday at sunset. A puppet, of exaggerated size and with an extraterrestrial appearance, entertains the public by dancing during one of the most beautiful moments of the whole day.

The show, suitable for both adults and children on holiday in Formentera, is characterized by the special care taken with this alien character: always dressed to perfection. The show is never the same and each performance is characterized by some detail: the alien dancing with the hula hoop, the alien dancing to the rhythm of music, the alien in the juggler version. In addition, the costume is also different depending on the day, the blue alien represents the man, while the red alien represents the woman.

Who is under those flashy clothes and that alien head is unknown, but he is certainly an entertainment professional. The alien is actually a man (or a woman) who twirls on stilts for the entire duration of the aperitivo. Children, great lovers of the alien’s show, are among his most active fans. But you don’t have to think of this kind of entertainment as childish. Against the backdrop of such a wild island steeped in ancient flavor, the contrast with this alien figure is worthy of a Burning Man-style show. The antithesis between these two worlds is highly suggestive!
